Kansai Explorer: Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe & Himeji (5 Days)
Kansai is the easiest region in Japan for hub-and-spoke travel: keep your hotel in Osaka and reach four famous cities by direct trains, mostly the JR Special Rapid (Shin-Kaisoku).
1
Arrive at Kansai Airport → Osaka
Pick your airport train by where you stay: Nankai for the Namba/Shinsaibashi area, JR Haruka for Tennoji or Shin-Osaka.
2
Kyoto day trip
The Special Rapid needs no reservations and no supplements — just tap in with an IC card. Trains run every 15 minutes.
3
Nara day trip
Kintetsu-Nara Station is a short walk from the deer park and Todai-ji — closer than JR Nara Station.
4
Himeji Castle + Kobe on the way back
One train, one hour, Japan's finest castle. On the way back, hop off at Sannomiya for Kobe's Chinatown and harbor — it's on the same line.
5
Osaka city day
The JR Osaka Loop Line plus the Midosuji subway line cover Osaka Castle, Umeda, Shinsaibashi and Namba. Finish with dinner in Dotonbori.
Tip: tap any rail segment to open it in the route search and adapt it to your own stations.
